A wonderful and unexpectedly timely bit of news came in last night, my debut book ‘Found and Ground - a practical guide to making your own foraged paints’ is now pre-orderable and online. It will be published in June 2023 in UK and USA, and hopefully will be translated into other languages thereafter. You can have a look, flick though a few pages, and even order it in advance, as this really helps it get into shops. If you or someone you love likes to make art and would appreciate moving away from acrylics and shop bought plastic tubes, this book is for you.
I have spent the last year working with my editor at Search Press to create a practical and approachable guide to get people making their own foraged and natural paints.
has kindly written the foreword as his book ‘The Wake’ was part of the reason I dived into archaic and ancient materials in the first place and created my basket of wild materials (which has since grown to encompass most of my room). I began to teach these methods publicly on the year long Dark Mountain course he ran with Way Of Nature in 2017. Some illustrations based on The Wake are in this book..
The book features how to make watercolour, gouache, glair, tempera, ink and veglair (my own invention, an all natural vegan-friendly egg-paint equivalent).
Being a a bibliophile, I am so excited to at last be sharing this side of my work in an actual book after years of teaching in person and online. The book will be printed on FSC European managed forests certified paper. It’s suitable for beginners or experienced artists, parents and children, and people who already forage for food and want to extend their hearty appreciation of earth’s richness into the realm of colour and art.
Wishing you a wonderful Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere, and a Merry Christmas everywhere, Caro.
Congratulations!!
