Congratulations on your day of publication Caroline. It’s surreal for me to have started reading this post earlier as I travelled from Ireland and to finish it here in Dartington, where I have just arrived. I’m looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the team later to embark on ‘Labyrinth...’
So looking forward to meeting you. I am on the train, as they say. Currently adding tunes to the Uncivil Savant playlist and attempting to answer emails... Feel like staring out the window. Hasta pronto!
it's hard to read your posts sometimes, because i'm green with envy... what do you wear for a base layer when you're not using synthetics? linen? i've been (very) slowly building up my bushcraft kit while the kids are still small, in hopes of getting away for some weekends in the future, to build on my rudimentary skillset.
Base layers are usually merino or fine lambs wool for me, as I can't afford silk jersey just now. I get mine in sales and on eBay... When it's not really cold then I still use cotton longjohns, even though others say they're not good, I find them fine above 5 deg C. Then I just layer up really well, with a handknit hip length woollen sweater being the most important, topped off with an old school 1980s waxed cotton jacket, or even a long Barbour coat. I look like I walked out of 'Z For Zachariah'. Don't be too envious, you can walk the woods with your bairn very soon!
here's hoping! Thing 1 has a birthday coming up... i think i'll be gifting a child-sized ferro rod and striker so i can start the initiation. thanks for sharing your travels for the benefit of us housebound folks.
Thanks, I can feel my whole being slowing down while tuning in to your way....
Your awareness of the energetic reality is soothing and makes me lean in even more. Like you say, now more often than not I can allow myself to be here.

I haven’t yet read Ridley Scott but another of Hoban’s books is a favourite of mine, ‘The Mouse and His Child’. https://open.substack.com/pub/margaretobrien/p/weather-report-on-beauty-b28?r=45sdw&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post

Belated congrats! I'm behind on emails and reading. This was a fascinating read...
